The CTL panel discusses what to make of Tom Thibodeau benching Joakim Noah the entire fourth quarter and overtime in the Bulls' loss to the Grizzlies on Saturday - 1/21
Transcript
The Bulls may have some drama. Of their own Tom Thibodeau bad joke you know midway through the third quarter and he never put it started -- back into the game you went -- Gibson called out. No staff for the final 23 minutes including overtime he finished with ten points five boards and did not speak with reporters after the loss today. -- always asked about. The benching. At the team's shoot around. Just a coach's decision we were you know we're struggling we're behind. The group that got in there. Got a spectator weird -- It was it was more that the way that it was -- at our disposal slap. That group was you can win a game or lose its worst thing is you've been around. You know the team has to come first -- -- -- the most important thing. So. Those of you know sometimes that happens and not a big deal. Can you say that out of it but the truth after wow. Because the interesting thing is it -- not see my holiday and when -- filed out. Now if you think he's not going to sit there you're kidding yourself. So -- covered the game where what happens when you think first and foremost let's acknowledge Martin Luther King for being such a great leader that he was a mistake the first. You know I was at that game the other day and I really thought -- come back in. My initial thought was he played 42 minutes in overtime game against Boston may -- he's resting -- maybe he's just. Did exhausted and that's why he's not coming back in. The -- -- not -- not to mess not the case then we're talking to some reporters they sit -- must be injured. There wasn't the case at all and then kind of looked at his body language on the bench and assume something's wrong so I don't know exactly -- kind of exchange he had when he came out. In the third quarter -- there was there was something wrong there and that's what led to all the spin on -- bad turn -- watching the game yet. Can't see it and then once yeah I thought OK he's Vega points. And then all of a sudden Ozzie Mohammed comes it would give some balls and it went OK it's. Beyond a bad turnover right right he had a sequence of about three bad plays where he missed offensive rebounds. He made a turnover and something else he he did wrong there. And I was like OK he just doesn't have a tonight but you know what Joseph came as a guy who played on emotion and he shows his emotions and I'm sure he showed his emotion and it is what it is. Right off that point he problems selling was probably said that's probably what happened he said something similar to like hit and that's kept him out of it and that's I think because thing you know -- clearly. Are you listen to -- explanation in that comment he said well we were so flat I just not very good there either win or lose the game with the line about there. Mean does that seem like what Thibodeau would do in that situation I don't know that doesn't sound like. Normal Thibodeau to me so my guess is sunning herself on the bench from them and I'll probably felt that it was best to keep the mound as a disciplinary action. And that's it I really don't think it's that much because the bottom line is. Joking dollars and a very important part of this team is very needed part of this team. It probably blows over and he's gonna have to be an important factor tonight you know the Lakers are sporting team so I think this is probably short. Right now wall's name re strained the hamstring Wednesday -- slam on Friday he can't go on Saturday. And now he will play. The game tend to do that point tonight we don't know if they'll play game time decision tonight what do you expect. Well I talked to -- well before the game the other night. Talked to very briefly and say hey how you feel that you need more tests done he said no more -- It's just a little strength he played it off but what. As we talked about with athletes and injuries they're going to downplay these injuries so they wanna play. I don't think he should play the other -- -- -- don't either against Boston he probably shouldn't you know I mean I know he wants a block there and do what's you know how about this team or whatever like that take some days doctors. Look at the long haul. Look at the long -- hey. You know wanted to we can you wanna you know -- federated which he did in Boston and could be out even longer so. Don't know what's gonna happen right but they need -- today it's gonna cover Kobe would ultimately -- who -- if he's -- well I think Jimmy Butler will get a shot you know sergeant Jamie played well against Rudy -- feel that I. Really good draft I think he's a great play I think he's going to be great I think he's going to be great for years to come alongside -- I mean he's a good. Young energetic guy can do on both sides of the floor to -- that appreciate about what he did the other night Wallace. He had a real rough start to the game he really did it came out. You know I think he was pushed a little bit too much his first ever career start -- slowly got into the game what is defense and let that translate over to offense and he did pretty well. Yeah I mean I like that the way that Jimmy bowlers played and certainly. For a young guy like him to be able to step up when you've got Deng out then you've got players injured I think that says a lot and when you. In the NBA these days when you draft a guy. Late first round early second round like Jimmy Butler. -- often expecting a whole lot from them and let's be fair a lot of -- second round draft picks turn out to be nothing and so it's clearly shows that the Bulls. Had such foresight to see that Jimmy Butler has a lot of skill and he yeah. Clearly fits what they're trying to do defensive I don't know I don't great I think he's a very solid piece -- -- didn't play. Yeah throw the word great around and wait to really don't I don't mean I'm just -- feel that way lately is the elites I don't know I don't know how I didn't call him elite players. Kobe is an elite free spirits are elite players. -- directly for LeBron delete those are great play -- very lead giving it a nice -- it is going to be a great player for his team that's what I saved up I didn't say hey he's gonna be -- five time all star is going to be. Oh what does that the next Scottie Pippen and next to do it -- -- say he's going to be a great player would agree with you can either way they they need a while back because when you've had but you know Marco as your last option which is seems to be all the time now that that can beat you one thing and it won't move on the Blackhawks the one thing that Thibodeau does. If you're playing he doesn't care you're tweak your -- forty minutes from -- -- -- on the court you're gonna play our government for a group that I don't disagree with you know I really don't mean I just gotta know when to manage this is. -- -- -- Thibodeau in his career with the Bulls I think he's a great coach I think he gets more out of his players. Than probably anyone in the league other than probably Gregg Popovich but the one thing you can really criticize him for his. Pushing guys a little bit too hard I think that's one of the things that contributed to Derrick Rose being injured last year. Well I think even in this era disagree -- that was an acute that happen here but I just an explosive in his -- -- -- but I'll stop. Are you saying yes and no but. -- got players in LA times during the year players play otherwise put -- put it in a bubble what what I think he has to be concerned about. With this group right now as it is. Is -- pushing me push from and you push -- -- pushing for that. Seeding or whatever so when their -- back. They might be that group might be you do it there's going to be some fresh coming -- the other might be exhaust -- -- group might be exhausted going into the playoffs you can't have us.
