SportsTalk Live: What goes in to being a columnist?
What is the job of a columnist is it too. Get people to get a reaction out of them is it to be topical is it to be something that interest you what is it you say you guys. And so yes to all that I don't think it's just one thing I. I I just you know I I don't know about you guys but I I don't think -- And people may not believe this but it I don't rights and not get this past you right to get the Q do you write together. Something you don't believe just to get. Writes that the person who want to write us goes tied at Oregon State -- now I write I write what I believe I you know I know you may think I'm an idiot for a but I have but I don't you. You know what if you -- and -- don't believe people can he can see right through it and we as a columnist you need to you know I love reading these guys because a craftsman -- -- the tools that we use her words the -- is being get a lot of people don't realize. How difficult it is to come up with something. Coaching to -- five days -- -- this city I feel like. You know shooting drought in -- barrel but would you agree and we almost always have something this kind of the greatest thing. Period we got the Blackhawks who you know March Madness is coming up. We got Derrick Rose Byrd for -- and you have to weigh in on endlessly. But I also think the what they want from losses and they know what's in Chicago people care about Chicago -- people who have been here. They want our opinions and they wanna see OK I know his feelings basically with you think about this what does -- think about that I strive what does he think about. You know the lockout what are bomb. So we try to entertain also you know it can't be -- Had an athlete go after one of you guys -- coach your manager your phone rings and you go. It is not going to be caucus I've gotten those calls. Mike -- -- 6 in the morning. About. I think I have written something down quoting McMahon. And the calling him symbol. -- RS classic. And my. Who is on them on the -- early and you know what you know on the money clean this up. But it was like what is is what is this what -- -- -- -- -- -- command about me and I mean he was not any good throat. I'm like god bless my key was wonderful to be around a wonderful to cover. And knew when it was over it was over you know the next day it was something else but -- he was great. I'd I'd Sammy Sosa get my face I wrote a column I wrote a column on the day before saying if I'm Sammy Sosa and I. I've never done steroids I'll I'll I'll take a drug test all you know it if if everybody thinks I'm on drugs I'm not I'll take a drug test -- -- -- not so weak he. Gives me this. I can go Raanan at corner into a room we said you set I of I take steroids and I said no I didn't that and this went back and forth there's got. He did an eternity never read the column somebody told so. I that I that's what usually happens there. Yeah I've had some management does -- from their main guy Jerry Reinsdorf was upset with some stuff I wrote one time and I understood it. We buried the hatchet I'd like to think that even if you are making fun of somebody. It's you make your form because we deserve it I think there's one rule. You should never heard somebody on intentionally. And here you know I would never call anybody a quitter very solemn ass for coach to be fired because it's their livelihood. -- I didn't ask for Lovie Smith to be fired. I know the other three why do you play pointing at me. Hit a wide one if you say that -- -- of -- -- I know why because I was ambivalent he was ten and six and a conceal the good things he's doing. And there's no coaches more popular than the one who hasn't. Played a game yet and that would be the case seriously to quarterback on the bench and I think she's great. You know whoever. You know next year. We got to have -- eleven and five season with the Bears to have improved on tennis six. We can't ever -- that a coach should be fired we know that's Apollo. You know I'm close to say about Bill Carmody. I'm trying to think you know back in the day with the Bulls it was just chaotic you didn't need -- -- they needed before -- -- of their guys coming and going. We've had some really good coaches here. You know I mean to call Ford -- swing to be fired as a manager would make no sense with this team what we've seen. So anyway I think you're asked about what it's like to be a columnist there's a responsibility. Obvious ones to our readers those to ourselves I think we don't write nobody in this city certainly you know. David on the Tribune you know wherever other columnists. They don't make things up where we don't write because you wanna get under somebody's skin. Are known for Notre Dame has been a very big flash point with a lot of things are gonna viewing that I tail. So. I won after only you know but I do wanna do it. Just to get a rise out of people but I thought just a real problem that Notre Dame for a having a lot of this whole -- to take place. And that's the whole institution they never got back we never said anything and maybe you know they just accept having been. Criticize and that's that's cool that's good right.
