Bishop McNamara cruises to 3A state championship

DEKALB, ILL. - Ariez Andrew scored three touchdowns and Jonathan Ward added two more to pace Bishop McNamara to a 50-7 victory over Unity for the Illinois Class 3A championship.

McNamara (13-1) led Unity (10-4) 42-0 at the half, having piled up 353 yards on offense and holding Unity's Rockets to minus-4 yards.

McNamara on Friday collected its fifth state championship, and first since 1987.

Ward's 56-yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage set the tone for the Fightin' Irish.

Ward ran for 189 yards on 17 carries, adding a 41-yard touchdown run in the second quarter to make it 28-0. Andrew, with 45 yards on eight carries, scored McNamara's last three touchdowns.

Jerrico Johnson also scored on the ground for McNamara, while Chris Bell scored on a 28-yard reception from Kobe Shutter.

Unity's only score, a 15-yard rush by Chandler Cousins, came with 6:22 remaining in the game.
