Lakes cornerback Cameron Ruiz picks Northwestern

It didn't take long for Northwestern head coach Pat Fitzgerald to land his first in-state commitment in the Class of 2017.

The Wildcats landed a verbal commitment today from Lakes Community junior cornerback Cameron Ruiz almost seconds after extending Ruiz the scholarship offer.

"Once (Northwestern) offered me I pretty much gave them my commitment on the spot," Ruiz laughed. "Northwestern has been my dream school for a long time. I just can't see going to any other school. It's been an amazing day for myself and my family."

Ruiz, who is now the 10th known verbal commitment in the Wildcats' 2017 recruiting class had a feeling that Northwestern could offer him a scholarship Monday. Ruiz was also prepared in advance if the offer was extended.

"I had a bit of a feeling that Northwestern could offer me a scholarship today from my coaches. I talked it all over with my family and my coaches last night, and they all agreed that if Northwestern offered me today that I was ready to commit. Everyone was on board with my decision, so once coach Fitzgerald offered me it was a very easy decision for me to make," Ruiz said. "Northwestern offers a great education, and they are also a top-level football program. Just the overall fit for me on and off the field is really everything I was looking for in a school."
