Colorado Avalanche confirm player tested positive for COVID-19

Nine days after an Ottawa Senators player became the first COVID-19 positive test in the NHL, the Colorado Avalanche have confirmed that one of their players tested positive as well.

The Avalanche announced in a statement that the player has been in isolation at home since symptoms began and have since recovered fully. The team did not disclose which player tested positive but did notify anyone that was known to have been in close contact with the athlete.

This is just the third positive COVID-19 test of a player in the NHL – the first two both coming from the Senators - though some organizations have had employees test positive, including the Vancouver Canucks and San Jose Sharks.  Just yesterday, the league announced further postponements to the scouting combine, draft, and awards shows and still seems to have no timetable on when play could resume.

The Senators were due to visit Chicago and play the Blackhawks on Friday, March 13th, the day after the league ultimately suspended play. The Blackhawks had no remaining games scheduled with the Avalanche.

The NHL recently instructed players and team staff to add an additional 10 days to their self-quarantine through April 6th.
