Darren Collison — who retired suddenly for religious reasons before last offseason's free agency period — is reportedly considering a return to the league, per ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.
At the time of his impending free agency, the Bulls were linked plenty to Collison, and with good reason — Collison is a 10-year vet and a stellar shooter, and the Bulls were in the market for point guard help. Last summer, he was coming off a season with the Pacers in which he averaged a career high in assists per game (6) and topped 40% 3-point shooting for the fourth consecutive year (he led the NBA in 3-point shooting percentage with Indiana in 2017-18).
But upon his retirement, the Bulls moved on to Tomas Satoransky, who has been a solid addition for the team. Now, even if Collison does find an NBA home, it will likely be far from the Windy City.
According to Wojnarowski, Collison's sights are set on Los Angeles, with his preferred destinations being either the Lakers (26-7) or the Clippers (24-11). Collison spent the 2013-14 season with the Clippers, current head coach Doc Rivers' first season with the team.
Wojnarowski also noted that if Collison does return, it likely won't happen until after the league's Feb. 6 trade deadline, when the winner of a potential sweepstakes for Andre Iguodala's services is known.
Bottom line for the Bulls: Collison's shooting might, at one time, have been of use, but the Bulls are now set at both guard spots and his sights are clearly set on a contender. On the right team, Collison still has the ability to swing games and significantly contribute at this point in his career.
Especially beware if he finds his way to the Lakers. One of their only weak-spots as a team this season has been backcourt shooting, and Collison has certainly proven his proficiency in that department.
