Injury update: Anthony Rizzo participates in Cubs Summer Camp workout

For the first time in five days, Anthony Rizzo took up his post at first base during the Cubs’ Summer Camp workout Saturday.

The team only went through fielding drills and batting practice – no intrasquad scrimmage. But Rizzo’s participation, while dealing with lower back tightness this week, was another step “in the right direction,” as Cubs manager David Ross put it.

“Got some swings off and felt good,” Ross said after talking to Rizzo. “… It looked like the ground balls went well and everything’s continued to move in the right direction. And we’ll continue to build him up. He’s itching to see some live pitching here soon, so we’ll get that in the works.”

Since Tuesday, Rizzo had sat out of team workouts and scrimmages while gradually working back to the field. When he wasn’t roaming the field and left field bleachers during Thursday’s intrasquad scrimmage, Rizzo was tracking pitches in the bullpen, according to Ross.

The Cubs are scheduled to open the season in two weeks.
