League determines Anthony Rizzo's slide should have been interference

Apparently video review wasn't enough to get the call right on Anthony Rizzo's slide Monday.

At least that's what an official review of the play from the league office is saying. According to reports, both teams were informed that Rizzo should have been called for interference on the play.

Rizzo tripped Pirates catcher Elias Diaz after Rizzo was thrown out on a force play. Diaz's ensuing throw to first in an attempt to turn a double play sailed high as he was tripped. Two runs scored on the play. Apparently, those runs shouldn't have counted and the double play should have been called.

The updated call won't change anything from the game obviously, but it provides a precedent for future calls involving slides at home plate and will add a bit more fuel to the debate about the play.

Doug Glanville had his own opinion on a possible solution to the confusion over the recently changed rules about sliding at home plate: treat home plate like first base.
