Martellus Bennett: Bears ‘could easily be 0-5'

Martellus Bennett, who landed on Friday’s injury report with a quad injury that has the tight end questionable for Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions, has little difficulty being blunt. And Bennett’s perspective on playing an 0-5 team (Detroit) is not that the Lions are abysmal so much is that but for a handful of plays, a 2-3 Bears team might have been looking at precisely that record.

“It's the NFL,” Bennett said. “I mean, we could easily be 0-5 right now. There's just a couple plays here and there.”

Which is typically the way in the NFL, any year. And those plays involve turnovers for the most part.

Of the 18 teams with a zero or minus- turnover ratio, only one (Indianapolis 3-2) has a winning record after five weeks of NFL season. And the Colts have undefeated New England coming up Sunday night.

The Lions are 30th in turnover ratio at minus-6; the Bears, whose four takeaways are tied for third-fewest in the NFL, are at minus-3.

“I think turnovers probably hurt them a little bit,” Bennett said, not specifically mentioning quarterback Matthew Stafford’s three interceptions and benching last Sunday in Detroit’s loss to Arizona.

The Lions had their way with the Bears the past two seasons, winning four straight. Coincidentally perhaps, the first of those was a 40-32 unraveling, at Detroit, after the Bears had opened the Marc Trestman era with three straight wins. That game featured three Jay Cutler interceptions and the Bears losing one of two fumbles.

“It's a division game so records really don't count,” Bennett said. “The last couple of years they have had our number so I'm hoping that this isn't a game that Matthew and Calvin [Johnson] and all those guys start clicking. So we're going to try to go in there and get another win.”
