Maryland announces home-and-home football series with Virginia

Maryland fans, get ready for a border battle.

The Terps announced Thursday a two-game, home-and-home football series with the Virginia Cavaliers, the team they've faced more times than any other opponent in program history.

Maryland will be the host in 2023 and travel to Virginia in 2024.

The two teams, former ACC foes and longtime regional rivals, have played 78 times, with the Terps holding a 44-32-2 advantage in the all-time series.

While Maryland tries to turn its fortunes around under DJ Durkin, Virginia has been one of the worst Power Five conference teams over the past decade. Just twice in the last 11 seasons have the Cavaliers won more than five games in a single campaign.

Six of those seasons were under the head-coaching direction of Mike London, who worked as an assistant on Durkin's staff this past season before leaving to become Howard's head coach earlier this month.

These games add two more against Power Five opponents to Maryland's future schedules. The Terps haven't been shy about scheduling big-name foes, with future games against Texas (2017 and 2018), West Virginia (2020 and 2021) and Virginia Tech (2026 through 2029). Maryland will also play Syracuse in 2019.
