MLB Hot Stove: Cubs miss out on Dallas Keuchel to the White Sox

Share

The Chicago Cubs haven't been big players in free agency so far, and they've missed out on another big name.

2015 American League Cy Young winner Dallas Keuchel is headed to their crosstown rivals, the Chicago White Sox.

The Cubs were one of the teams linked to Keuchel, but not landing the free agent isn't utterly shocking.

The Cubs front office is trying to shed payroll to get under the luxury tax threshold for the 2020 season. They were hit with a $7.6 million luxury tax bill for the 2019 season, and the penalties continue to escalate in numerous ways in consecutive seasons. If the Cubs get under the threshold next season, the penalties will reset for 2021.

Until that money comes off the books, high-priced free agents won't find their way to Wrigley. Unfortunately for the Cubs, free agents are signing quicker than last offseason — and faster than the Cubs can trim salary.

Slowing down the process is Kris Bryant's service time grievance.

The club has entertained trading one of their young stars to trim salary, and a name that's been mentioned frequently is Bryant's. His service time grievance will determine whether the Cubs have one or two years of team control left.

Another team is unlikely to trade for Bryant before a ruling is handed down, and a decision isn't likely until after the New Year.

The Cubs aren't moving fast enough to keep up with a piping MLB Hot Stove.
