The NBA G League is currently in its 19th season of existence, making major strides as it continues its mission to have a one-to-one affiliate for every team in the NBA and be a reliable place where franchises can further develop young talent. On Monday, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the NBA Players Association and the NBA G-League will be meeting this week at the G-League Showcase in Las Vegas to talk about the possibility of forming a players union for the NBA's minor league.
The NBA G League Showcase is an annual event that the G League puts on to show off all of the great talent permeating throughout the league. They recently rebranded the showcase to include a $100,000 grand prize and a seeding process to make the tournament more interesting for players and scouts alike. Because it is the first year of the G League trying out the tournament-style showcase, it makes even more sense to have the meeting between the NBPA and G League this week.
In statements made to ESPN, G-League President Shareef Abdur-Rahim said he ultimately supports the players' right to unionize:
"We support the players' right to unionize......We view this as a positive thing and are looking to continue to grow our league for the players to develop and accomplish their dreams."
