Nestor Molina had an MRI done on his right (throwing) elbow and has been placed on the disabled list, a spokesman with Double-A Birmingham confirmed. While the injury was not known by the team as they departed for a road trip Tuesday, multiple Spanish-language reports say Molina has elbow tendinitis, which could cost him a good portion or the rest of the 2012 season, depending on the severity of the injury.

The White Sox acquired Molina from Toronto last winter for closer Sergio Santos, who was recently transferred to the 60-day disabled list and hasn't pitched since April 22 due to a shoulder issue.

Rated across the board in the preseason as the second-best prospect in the White Sox farm system behind Addison Reed, Molina has struggled to find the form he showed in the Blue Jays organization. In 84 innings with Double-A Birmingham, Molina has a 4.61 ERA with 19 walks and 59 strikeouts, and he allowed six runs in four innings in his lone start with Triple-A Charlotte.

The 23-year-old Molina was outstanding in 2011, compiling a 2.21 ERA with only 16 walks and 148 strikeouts in 130 13 innings, most of which were spent with high Single-A Dunedin in Toronto's farm system.
