Tigers' Alburquerque to miss half of 2012

Detroit will be without flamethrowing reliever Al Alburquerque for the first half of next season after the awesomely-named righty underwent elbow surgery this week, according to MLive.com.

Alburquerque struck out 67 in 43 13 innings out of the Tigers bullpen last season, allowing just nine runs all year. He dominated the White Sox, allowing no runs on four hits and three walk with seven strikeouts in five games.

Alburquerque began his pro career with the Cubs in 2006 before going to Colorado in 2009. He had never pitched above Double-A before 2011, when Detroit took a flier on the 25-year-old native of San Pedro de Macoris in the Dominican Republic.

And, again: his name of Al Alburquerque. Hopefully he sticks around in the majors -- even if it means successful outings against the White Sox -- just for his name value.
