Trade deadline acquisition Martínez rejoins Cubs

The Cubs made a roster move prior to Sunday's game against Minnesota, recalling outfielder/designated hitter José Martínez from their South Bend alternate site.

In a corresponding move, the club optioned reliever Josh Osich to South Bend.

The Cubs acquired Martínez from Tampa Bay on Aug. 30, ahead of the trade deadline. He went 0-for-14 in six games and was optioned to South Bend on Sept. 8.

Manager David Ross said at the time they wanted Martínez to get consistent at-bats, which was difficult because Martínez felt his timing was off.

"We need him," Ross said on Sept. 8. "He's a really valuable piece that we feel like can help us."

Martínez has had success against left-handed pitching in his career, an area the Cubs have struggled this season (.629 OPS, No. 29 in MLB).

The Cubs acquired Osich from Boston on Aug. 31. He's made four appearances, allowing six runs (three earned) on five hits in 2 2/3 innings.
