High School Lites Preview: Week 3

Share

CSN Chicago will have cameras covering the biggest high school football games across Chicagoland on the Week 3 edition of High School Lites, Friday at 11:30 p.m. Several conference races begin this week. Can the defending 6A state champs, Nazareth Academy, get off to a good start in the East Suburban Catholic Conference against undefeated St. Patrick? Downers Grove North travels to take on West Suburban Silver rival Hinsdale Central for the Old Oaken Bucket. Who wins the matchup between new DuPage Valley Conference and old Upstate 8 rivals Waubonsie Valley at Neuqua Valley? Can Providence Catholic avoid going 0-for-the-season and beat No. 2 Mount Carmel at Gately Stadium in Chicago Catholic League Blue play?

Curie vs. Brooks, 7:15 p.m. at Gately Stadium *Thursday*

EDGY's Take: This could be one of the more interesting games this season in the CPL outside of say Saturday night’s Simeon-Phillips tilt at Gately. Curie (2-0) and head coach Jay McDonagh has the Condors off to another strong start and Curie will need every win they can get playing in the rugged CPL Illini Red Bird conference. Brooks (0-2) and head coach Benjamin McCall are off to a slow start yet the Eagles two losses come at the hands of suburban powers Kaneland and Thornton Township.

EDGY's Pick: Curie 22, Brooks 21

(1) Homewood-Flossmoor at Stagg, 7:00 p.m.

EDGY's Take: H-F, the state's top ranked team, look unstoppable behind an offense led by senior quarterback Bryce Gray and a deep group of skill players, including twin senior running backs Deante Harley-Hampton and Devonte Harley-Hampton. Stagg (1-1) and head coach Mike Fahey got a huge performance last week from junior running back Hubert Hughes, who ran for 349 yards and three touchdowns in a win over Andrew. Can the Chargers defense slow down the Vikings?

EDGY's Pick: H-F 46, Stagg 12

St. Patrick at (6) Nazareth Academy, 7:00 p.m.

EDGY's Take: Nazareth Academy (2-0) and head coach Tim Racki have installed permanent lights and will begin ESCC conference play on a roll. The Roadrunners feature Notre Dame verbal commit WR/DB/KR Julian Love along with junior running back Ivory Kelly-Martin, who has has been putting up big numbers so far. St. Patrick (2-0) veteran head coach Dan Galante lost standout senior quarterback Paddy Devlin to injury last week so they decided to crank up the running game behind junior Nicholas Childress. Childress set a new school single-game rushing record with 290 yards along with six rushing touchdowns against Glenbard South.

EDGY's Pick: Nazareth Academy 31, St. Patrick 17

Perspectives Leadership Academy at Solorio, 7:00 p.m.

EDGY's Take: Perspectives Leadership Academy (1-1) and head coach Terry Jones will look to slow down Solorio (2-0) this week. Solorio and head coach Matt Lawson has posted wins against two suburban teams in Ridgewood (28-21) and Rich East (35-14). Can the Perspectives/Leadership defense slow down the Sun Warriors offense?

EDGY's Pick: Solorio 29, Perspectives Leadership Academy 14

Downers Grove North at (12) Hinsdale Central, 7:30 p.m.

EDGY's Take: This is the annual battle for the Old Oaken Bucket. Hinsdale Central (2-0) has averaged nearly 42 points per game in 2015 as 6-foot-7, 200-pound senior quarterback Michael Sessa has been on fire. Downers Grove North (2-0) and head coach John Wander wants to pound teams into the ground with his academy style dive-option offense and strong defense. Can the Trojans control the ball and time of possession and keep the Red Devils defense on the sidelines?

EDGY's Pick: Hinsdale Central 27, Downers Grove North 14

Elk Grove at (18) Barrington, 7:30 p.m.

EDGY's Take: Elk Grove (0-2) and first year head coach John Sigmund has been putting up points so far but the defense hasn't found a way top slow down to very tough teams. Barrington (2-0) will be the third straight tough team for the Elk Grove defense to contend with this season. Barrington senior quarterback Johnny Davidson is a key, along with a very good offensive line.

EDGY's Pick: Barrington 34, Elk Grove 21

Prospect at (25) Fremd, 7:30 p.m.

EDGY's Take: Prospect (1-1) has been in two tight games so far this season, including last week's 14-7 win over Hoffman Estates. The Knights didn't attempt a pass last week and look for senior running back Bobby Jarosz to lead a deep group of backs for Prospect. Fremd (2-0) has found life on offense this season as Michigan State verbal commit in safety Kenney Lyke has also been playing running back for the Vikings.

EDGY's Pick: Fremd 24, Prospect 21

(20) Waubonsie Valley at Neuqua Valley, 7:30 p.m.

EDGY's Take: Despite a close 14-7 loss to Naperville Central last Friday, Neuqua Valley (1-1) is far from a down team this fall. The Wildcats have a core of players to watch starting with junior wide receiver/safety Isaiah Robertson, junior wide receiver/safety Owen Piche and senior running back/linebacker Nick Osikowicz. Waubonsie Valley (2-0) and head coach Paul Murphy will look to establish the running game with quarterback Jack Connolly along and senior running back/linebacker Max Ihry. How healthy is Neuqua after last week's highly physical game against Naperville Central?

EDGY's Pick: Neuqua Valley 35, Waubonsie Valley 34 in 2OT

Providence at (2) Mount Carmel, 7:30 p.m.

EDGY's Take: Providence Catholic (0-2) has dropped two straight to start the season, and give credit to the Celtics for scheduling a brutal non-conference schedule. However, with an 0-2 record and Mount Carmel (2-0) looming this week, Providence will need a big effort here. Celtics junior running back Richie Warfield has been the main offensive weapon. On defense, watch out for senior inside linebacker Brendan O'Hara. Mount Carmel and head coach Frank Lenti is expected to get senior quarterback Anthony Thompson back in the lineup after sitting out last week's win over Morgan Park. Can the Celtics get its passing game on track and also cut down on the penalties that have plagued them so far in 2015?

EDGY's Pick: Mount Carmel 21, Providence Catholic 17

[MORE PREPS: The five top undecided recruits in the Class of 2016]

New Trier at Maine West, 7:00 p.m.

EDGY's Take: New Trier (2-0) and head coach Brian Doll has been paced by the run-and-pass threat from junior quarterback Clay Czyzynski and a big and physical defense. Maine West (2-0) is 2-0 for the first time since the 2005 season. The Warriors and head coach Jason Kradman will look for another big game from senior quarterback Jake Riportella.

EDGY's Pick: New Trier 28, Maine West 7

St. Rita at (11) Montini, 7:30 p.m.

EDGY's Take: Montini Catholic (2-0) and veteran head coach Chris Andriano have gotten out of the gates quickly as the Broncos are getting a big performance so far from senior quarterback Justin Blake and a shotgun read option offense built for speed. St. Rita (1-1) was able to get its offense on track in last week's 49-14 win over Dunbar. Can the Mustangs defense slow down the Montini speedy spread option game? Can the Montini defense handle the St. Rita power game? This could be a lot closer than many may think.

EDGY's Pick: Montini 27, St. Rita 21
