If the Cardinals were trying to pry Elvis Andrus or Jurickson Profar away from the Rangers, they struck out looking.

Wednesday’s mega-deal between the Tigers and Rangers almost assures the Rangers will keep Profar and Andrus with Ian Kinsler gone. So where will the Cardinals look now to improve their shortstop situation?

One option could be the Chicago White Sox and Alexei Ramirez.

Bernie Miklasz of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch said there is some interest from Cards GM John Mozeliak about Ramirez, whose offensive numbers have been sliding as of late. But Ramirez does remain under the team’s control through 2015 with a club option for 2016, and even at age 32, he was still able to show off his speed, swiping a career-high 30 bases last year.

Miklasz also said the Cardinals made some calls to GM Rick Hahn and the White Sox at the trade deadline to gauge the team’s interest in trading Ramirez, but talks stalled.

This certainly won’t be the end of any Ramirez trade rumors.
