DETROIT — Torii Hunter had a little fun on Monday afternoon at the expense of the Boston police officer who celebrated simultaneous to his hard fall a night earlier.

In a sheer joyous reaction to David Ortiz’s game-tying, eighth-inning grand slam at Fenway Park on Sunday night, officer Steve Horgan, a 27-year veteran of the force, was seen thrusting his arms upward when the ball cleared Hunter’s glove and landed in the bullpen.

At the same moment, however, Hunter flew over the short fence and tumbled headfirst into the bullpen, appearing to have cut himself on the way down. Though Hunter said at Monday’s workout in between Games 2 and 3 of the American League Championship Series he had a slight headache, it didn’t keep him from making a few jokes at Horgan’s expense.

“I should have kicked (the cop) in the face,” Hunter said with a smile. “I want to thank the Red Sox bullpen for checking on me. That was awesome. ... They put (the game) aside in favor of human life, unlike the cop. Protect and serve? They ought to take that off his badge.”
