Brent Morel's once-promising career with the White Sox is over, as the third baseman was claimed by the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday. The White Sox also claimed left-hander Eric Surkamp off waivers from San Francisco on Monday.

The 26-year-old Surkamp posted a 2.60 ERA in 16 starts between Triple-A and Single-A last year in the Giants organization, striking out 71 and walking 23 in 86 innings. Surkamp has cracked the majors twice, starting six games for San Francisco in 2011 and one in 2013 (in which he allowed seven runs in 2 2/3 innings).

Surkamp was a sixth-round pick of the Giants out of North Carolina State in 2008.

In parts of four seasons with the White Sox, Morel hit .229/.276/.333 with 13 home runs -- eight of which came in September of 2011. That stretch lent hope that the slick-fielding Morel could become an offensive threat in the White Sox lineup, but a nagging back injury limited him to 35 ineffective games in 2012.

Morel appeared in 12 games with the White Sox in 2013, collecting five hits and walking five times in 30 plate appearances. He spent the rest of last season at Triple-A Charlotte, where he hit .266/.349/.403 with six home runs and 104 strikeouts in 452 plate appearances.
