Trayce Thompson's famous family attends first game

Basketball may run in his family but Trayce Thompson has been a baseball player since his father Mychal could remember.

The entire Thompson family is in town after the White Sox outfielder was promoted to the major leagues for the first time on Monday. Unlike his father and two older brothers, Mychel and Klay, Trayce Thompson is the family’s only baseball player. But similar to his brothers and father, Trayce Thompson is the fourth member of the family to play at the highest level of his sport.

“He walked around at 4 years old, no exaggeration, that kid walked around with a bat in his hand,” Mychal Thompson said. “Everywhere. Swinging around the house. You had to be careful coming around the corner in a house because he might be swinging. You had to make sure he wasn’t practicing his swing in the hallways. Ever since he could walk, baseball has been his game.”

Older brother Mychel Thompson, who played for the Cleveland Cavaliers, remembers how Trayce always played baseball, even if it was basketball season. Middle brother Klay Thompson also followed in the footsteps of Mychal -- who played for the Los Angeles Lakers, Portland Trail Blazers and San Antonio Spurs -- and was an All-Star for the Golden State Warriors on their way to first NBA title since 1975.

But Trayce Thompson stuck with baseball and his family couldn’t be happier for him.

“He did his own thing,” Mychel Thompson said. “Ever since we were little, even if it was basketball season, he’d still be working on baseball after basketball practice. He definitely put in the work so it’s a great feeling to see him out here doing what he loves.”

With two days notice, the entire Thompson family had time to travel to Chicago to attend Monday’s game, though Mychel said they only arrived right before first pitch. The advance word of the promotion allowed Mychal Thompson to be a proud parent yet again in a summer that already has seen Klay earn an NBA ring.

“I’m no different from any other parent who sees their son or daughter’s dream come true,” Mychal Thompson said. “It doesn’t have to be in sports. It could be in whatever field they are into if they have their dream job. Any parent understands how I feel. My experience is a lot more high profile because we are in the public eye. I’m no different from any other parent out there who is proud to see their child doing what he wants to do.”
