White Sox: Alex Avila's sore lower back ‘much better'

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Alex Avila victoriously pumped his left fist in the air on Sunday morning before he could even be asked how his stiff back feels.

Just as he expected, the White Sox catcher said he’s already on the mend, only a day after he exited a game early with lower back soreness. Avila feels so good that he wouldn’t rule out the possibility of a return to the field before the team’s final Arizona exhibition on Wednesday.

“I feel great today,” Avila said. “Much better — I knew it was not something that was going to keep me out.

“The way I feel, yeah. I wouldn’t put off catching (Monday). We’ll talk to Robin (Ventura), they’ll probably want to see how I feel tomorrow. But this won’t keep me out very long.”

The veteran said he has routinely experienced lower back soreness during spring training as his body readjusts to playing regularly after a four-month layoff. He felt his back grab after he swung the bat in a third-inning of a 9-7 loss to the Cincinnati Reds. But Avila said the move is as much about being cautious and didn’t expect a long layoff.
