The White Sox will announce the signing of Cuban first baseman Jose Abreu at a press conference on Tuesday morning.
Word of Abreu’s six-year, $68-million contract -- a record deal for a first-time international player -- leaked 10 days ago.

At the time, however, Abreu needed to take a physical to complete the deal. Major League Baseball also bars teams from announcements of major news in the postseason so as not to distract from its “jewel” events like the World Series or league championship series. Tuesday is a World Series travel day as the two teams return to Boston for Game 6.
As for Abreu, 26, the White Sox believe he has the kind of bat that can help recharge an offense that dropped from fourth in the American League in runs scored in 2012 to 15th.
“This guy is the best pure hitter to come over from Cuba,” one American League scout said. “He also has immense raw power and given his patience and approach, will find a way to use it. … I expect him to be an above-average hitter from Day 1 and will really surprise some people as he adjusts to the league/culture.”
