GLENDALE, Ariz. — Rookie Matt Davidson loves that the 1983 White Sox throwback uniforms have been permanently added to the rotation.
Club officials and manager Robin Ventura announced on Wednesday the 1983 jerseys, which the team wore for select Sunday home games in 2013, can be worn at anytime this season. The uniforms were so popular with players that the White Sox added them, along with a new 1983 hat, into the regular rotation.
Players will determine what games the team wears the ’83 throwbacks as they would the alternate black jerseys.
“They’re awesome,” Davidson said. “I wore the Diamondbacks ones last year, they were awesome. They’re not button ups, right? I like that. That’s cool. Those are awesome. I can’t wait to throw those on.”
The 1983 jerseys were worn in 2013 as part of the team’s 30-year celebration of its “winning ugly” squad. The uniforms quickly gained popularity with players. Jake Peavy requested the White Sox wear them for what turned out to be his final home start on a weekday.
