Are you the next Cubs announcer?

The Cubs announced a contest giving fans a chance to become their next public address announcer at Wrigley Field. The current PA announcer Paul Friedman is leaving the organization to "pursue a new job opportunity" that would keep him from working day games at Wrigley.

Fans can submit their audio or video applications to http:cubs.careerbuilder.com. Finalists will be selected by March 14, and the winner will be selected March 25. (NBC Sports)

DePaul's Melvin to miss remainder of season

Head coach Oliver Purnell announced that Cleveland Melvin will miss the rest of the 2010-2011 season with a left thumb sprain. The DePaul freshman injured his thumb on Feb. 23 during a game against St. John's and missed Saturday's game against USF.

Melvin is a candidate for the Big East Rookie of the Year and leads the Blue Demons and all Big East freshmen with 14.3 points per game this season. DePaul hosts Rutgers in the final home game of the regular season Wednesday night at Allstate Arena. (DePaulBlueDemons.com)

Another Rookie of the Week honor for DePaul

Brandon Young picked up the slack in the absence of injured DePaul standout Cleveland Melvin on Saturday, racking up 23 points against USF. He was rewarded Monday with his second Big East Rookie of the Week honor this season. Together, Young and Melvin have earned the honor six times in 15 weeks during the 2010-2011 season.

Young was 10-of-17 shooting from the field against the Bulls on Saturday. It was his third game with 20 or more points. He also registered a conference-scoring high with the 23 points. (DePaulBlueDemons.com)

Carl Edwards Jr.'s special tie to Memorial Day

Carl Edwards Jr.'s special tie to Memorial Day

For Carl Edwards Jr., Memorial Day has a special meaning.

That's because the Cubs reliever has a very close tie to the armed services.

Edwards met his fiance, Nette Smith, before her deployment in Afghanistan. Throughout her active service, Edwards kept in touch by writing her letters. Their relationship eventually blossomed, and now the couple has a one-year-old child.

With Smith's army commitment finished, she views Memorial Day as a time to appreciate all those who serve.

"To me, Memorial Day is a day set aside for me to remember some of the people I have met who sacrificed everything," Smith said.
