He was arguably the Cubs most pleasant suprise last season. With a new regime taking over at Clark and Addison last winter, Jeff Samardzija leaned on a lesson he learned at Notre Dame.

"I remember going into my junior year in college. Under Ty Willingham I played sparingly, to put it nicely. I came out under new management and a new staff my junior year and there was more playing time and everything," Samardzija said.

Then it was deja vu in Cubbie blue. Last season, Jeff Samardzija led the Cubs pitching staff in wins, innings pitched and strikeouts. That might just be the beginning. Samardzija aspires to be the Cubs Opening Day starter and he worked hard this winter to take the next step.

"Consistency without a doubt," he said. "A lot of times you see it in different sports, guys have a good season, but I want to come out and show that I'm not only proven, I'm trending still upwards."
