Camp Notes: Wootton could be breakout player on defense

One player that caught my eye several times at training camp today was Corey Wootton.

The former Northwestern star is shining at two positions along the defensive line. He's typically played at defensive end spot, but so far in camp he's getting lots of reps in the nickel package at defensive tackle. The versatility only helps his cause and my guess is he will be this year's Henry Melton as the breakout player on defense.

The injury to D.J. Williams will no doubt open the door for second round pick Jon Bostic to earn the starting role at middle linebacker. If Williams misses more than a week, that could be enough for Bostic to gain confidence and display his talents.

There is no telling how the offensive line will play as a group , but it is very apparent the group is more talented across the board. If they do sustain any injuries it won't be as devastating as it would have been in years past. The versatility of guys like Matt Slauson, Eben Britton , Edwin Williams, and even James Brown make the unit solid.
