'Rushmore' for Washington gets another 3 out of 4

NBC/Comcast cousin Mike Florio out at ProFootballTalk.com has done it again.

As he did for the Dallas Cowboys and the New York Giants (we’ll address that one later), Mike has managed to get the three alley-oops, then just got the “oops” part on No. 4 in his efforts to establish the four “Faces of the Franchise” for his Mt. Rushmore nominees for each NFL team.

For the Washington Redskins:

Joe Gibbs. Gimme. Sammy Baugh. Gimme. Hogs. Gimme. (They weren’t necessarily the face of the franchise but they certainly were the nose of it.) How some commenters could fault putting a group on the mountain is scary.

But as he did with the Cowboys: Mikey, Mikey, Mikey… . Now you’re scaring me.

Darrell Green?

Even Shaun King, on the NBC panel with Eric Kuselias and Ross Tucker discussing the selections, at least suggested Art Monk; Green was the NFL’s fastest man but Monk ran pretty fast, too, and he did it with the football.

Green, also a Hall of Fame’r, was a cornerback legend. He played until he was 42 and intercepted 54 passes. That’s good for 21st place all-time –- not the stuff of Rushmore’ing.

Mike could have gone with Joe Theismann and at least been excused for succumbing to the hype tsunami.

But not to install John Riggins, admittedly a Jet before he went to Washington, the No. 16 rusher of all time… . Riggins’ 4th-and-1 run actually overshadows how good he really was. Don’t go by Pro Bowl selections; that’s voted on, not “won.”

Want more on why “voted on” has to be tempered as a measuring standard? Robert Griffin III made more than a few fan choices.

No, I’m not making that up.
