Last month, it was reported that Purdue head basketball coach Matt Painter would be getting a contract extension. Purdue made things official Friday.

The Boilermakers announced that Painter received a three-year contract extension that keeps him under contract through the 2021-22 season.

"We are thrilled that Matt will continue to lead the Purdue basketball team and carry the program into the next era of Purdue athletics," Purdue athletics director Morgan Burke said in the announcement. "He has been at the helm of a very successful run both on the court and in the classroom, and we are excited that he has reaffirmed his commitment to his alma mater. His passion and energy for Purdue University is evident, and we are looking forward to the future of Purdue basketball under his watch."

"I’m really excited about where we are as a program," Painter said in the announcement. "Purdue is a special place with special people, and I’m humbled to be a part of it. There is no place I’d rather be, and I am excited to get the 2016-17 season started."

Painter will enter his 12th season as Purdue's head coach this fall. In his 11 seasons, he's guided the Boilers to a 238-134 overall record and a 113-81 mark in Big Ten play. He's won one regular-season conference championship and one Big Ten Tournament championship, taking the team to eight NCAA tournaments, including back-to-back Sweet Sixteens in 2009 and 2010. Last season, Purdue went 26-9 with a 12-6 record in conference play.

Painter is Purdue's third all-time winningest coach and ranks 18th on the Big Ten's all-time wins list. He's one of just six coaches to be named the league's Coach of the Year three times, along with Gene Keady, Bobby Knight, Bo Ryan, Tom Izzo and Thad Matta.
