The Blackhawks placed defenseman Steve Montador on waivers on Monday, as first reported by TSN's Darren Dreger.

Montador, who has struggled with concussion issues for more than a year, was finally cleared to play last week. He has not played in a game yet for the Blackhawks.

The 33-year-old Montador is currently in the midst of a four-year deal that pays him $2.75 million a season. Teams have until noon (EST) Tuesday to claim Montador. If he clears waivers, which is very likely, Montador will be assigned to the Rockford IceHogs. Since Montador played in just one game in over a year, there was talk that he would go on a conditioning assignment with the IceHogs before returning to NHL games.

Montador talked candidly on Friday about the ups and downs he’s faced trying to return from concussions.
