The son of former Los Angeles Laker, Mychal Thompson, offers a power-speed combo and has potential as a future center fielder; solid speed enabled him to steal 21 bases last season and helped improve his reads and jumps defensively; has solid arm strength.
Has struck out 338 times the last two seasons and needs to improve on recognition of breaking pitches; has shortened what previously was a long, uppercut swing.
He said it
On not being intimidated by a big league clubhouse: “I grew up in a locker room and I’ve met a lot of great baseball people through my dad. I’ve known Rod Carew since I was 13 years old and a lot of guys. It’s not really a whole lot of adjustment. Athletes are just kind of the norm to me. Our neighbor in Portland was Clyde Drexler. It’s kind of my element being around them.
