Bulls draft picks Tony Snell and Erik Murphy each signed rookie contracts with the team Wednesday, the organization announced.

Snell, a 6-foot-7 swingman from New Mexico, was the 20th overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft, while Murphy, a 6-foot-10 power forward from Florida, was the 49th overall selection.

Both players are poised to make their Bulls debut Saturday in the NBA summer league in Las Vegas, when the team, once again guided by assistant coach Adrian Griffin, faces the Memphis Grizzlies. Snell will wear No. 20 and Murphy will wear No. 31 for the Bulls.

Though it’s essentially unrelated to the signings of Snell and Murphy—the second-rounder’s salary does help the team financially—in other Bulls news, the team’s 2012-13 luxury-tax bill ended up being $3.9 million after league tabulations, the first time the franchise has ever been hit with the resulting penalty, a $1.50 charge for every dollar spent over the luxury-tax threshold.

The Bulls are expected to face even steeper penalties next year—the NBA announced Tuesday that the 2013-14 tax level is $71.748 million—and Wednesday’s official signing of veteran swingman Mike Dunleavy Jr., the team is projected to be more than $5 million over the tax line, meaning the punitive measures would increase to $1.75 for every dollar over the limit.
