An injured groin will keep Bulls shooting guard Jimmy Butler off the USA Basketball select team, Yahoo Sports reported one day before practice begins in Las Vegas.

Butler would have joined teammate Doug McDermott -- who is appearing with Team USA for the second straight year -- on the select team, practicing against Team USA participant Derrick Rose and Team USA assistant coach Tom Thibodeau.
Butler is coming off a year in which he averaged career-highs 13.1 points, 4.9 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.9 steals per game. He was named to the NBA All-Defensive second team but after averaging nearly 39 minutes per game - second in the NBA - avoiding the rigors of those practices might be the best option for the 24-year-old. Still, gaining international exposure and competing against the league's best also would have been beneficial, so the injury comes as a disappointment.
