The Cubs avoided arbitration with Darwin Barney on Thursday by agreeing to terms on a one-year deal worth $2.3 million. The Cubs and Barney had until Feb. 21 to negotiate and avoid going into arbitration.
Barney, a 2012 Gold Glove winner, struggled for the Cubs last season. In 141 games, he hit just .208 and had a .266 OBP.
The 28-year-old Oregon native has a career batting average of .246 to go with 16 home runs and 130 RBI.
Barney is expected to be the Cubs Opening Day second baseman in 2014.
