Sports day worthy of a soap opera

It was a slow summer day. The Bulls, Bears and Blackhawks are still in the offseason. The Cubs and White Sox are struggling. Then out of the clear blue sky comes a sports day worthy of a soap opera.

First a mild NFL story about another NFL suspension. Broncos Linebacker Von Miller reportedly faces a 4 game ban for violating the league's substance-abuse policy. He had 18.5 sacks last season, but around here it's not huge news. This was just an appetizer. The CSN newsroom is still business as usual.

The Matt Garza trade quickly changed that. Months of rumors, sources and speculation finally come to a close. The Cubs get 5 players back from the Texas Rangers. It will be several years before we know if the Cubs picked up any valuable pieces in their rebuilding process, but as Garza always likes to say, "It is what it is." At this point our Comcast Sportsnet newsroom is buzzing.

Now it's time for the big finish. MLB suspends Milwaukee Brewers star Ryan Braun for the rest of the season. Braun will lose about $20,000 a day, but that seems like a bargain after what he's done to the game and Dino Laurenzi. Dino is the guy who collected a urine sample from Braun. As far as I can tell, that doesn't sound like a great job. Still, the Brewers slugger decided to rip this poor guy's credibility, when he knew he was lying. That's low, even for a cheater.

There's never a dull day around here. This one has delivered more drama than most, but none of it has involved actual game action. Hopefully that trend changes soon.
