Fire: Designated Player David Accam receives MLS honor

It was only a matter of time before Chicago Fire winger David Accam would find his feet in Major League Soccer.

After scoring his first MLS goal in a tantalizing performance against New York City FC, Accam was named to the MLS Team of the Week on Monday, becoming the second Fire player this season to earn the honor after Harry Shipp in Week 4.

"David is an exciting player, and when we saw him it was like ‘wow, he could be available and let’s go after him’, and we did," said Frank Yallop following Friday night's 1-0 win. "He’s excited to be here and I thought he played fantastic tonight and I still think there is more in him. I think he can be a little more attack minded.”

Accam registered six shots against the expansion side and capitalized on a woeful error from Ryan Meara to snatch the game-winner. The Ghanaian international also drew the foul that led to the sending off of midfielder Andrew Jacobson in the 23rd minute.

While appearing to find his rhythm that helped the Men in Red maintain an unbeaten record against Eastern Conference opponents, Accam's display, coupled with Monday's honor, may have just caught the eye of Ghanaian National Team head coach Avram Grant who was in attendance at Toyota Park. However, the Designated Player is echoing Yallop's sentiments and knows he is capable of much more.

“I'm 100% now, and I know I can give more to this team," he said following the match. "I just need to continue working hard, and I know goals will come to me.”
