UF, FSU headline Tuesday's Everett Golson transfer rumors

There exists the possibility Everett Golson is the last big-name free agent of sorts to ever hit the college football landscape.

If the NCAA ultimately decides to no longer allow players to transfer and play immediately as graduate students after completing their degrees -- which, given the way transfer rules have been restricted and the rhetoric against graduate transfers recently, seems like a strong possibility -- we may never see the kind of open interest in a player we're seeing around Golson.

Tuesday's rumors largely centered around the state of Florida, with Golson visiting the University of Florida according to SI's Andy Staples. Jim McElwain doesn't have a clear-cut No. 1 quarterback for his first year in Gainesville, so gauging Golson's interest certainly makes sense with sophomore (and six-game starter in 2014) Treon Harris and redshirt freshman Will Grier the other options on campus.

The problem with Florida, and every other SEC school, is Golson would need to have a waiver granted by the conference to transfer into it given his 2013 academic suspension. Golson's home state SEC school, according to Bleacher Report's Barrett Sallee, is already out of the picture:

Golson visited Florida State on Monday and 'Noles coach Jimbo Fisher discussed the program's interest on Tuesday:

While Florida State makes sense in that it's not an SEC school but it's in the South, Golson would have to come to Tallahassee and compete with Sean Maguire to earn the No. 1 job:

That could be a sticking point for Golson, given 2015 looks like his final opportunity to have complete control of an offense (he doesn't profile as a top NFL prospect). Going to Tallahassee would be a risk in that Maguire, who started a game last year and has experience in Jimbo Fisher's offense, holds on to the starting job and he's stuck in a worse situation than if he stayed at Notre Dame.

Golson threw for 3,445 yards and accounted for 37 touchdowns last year and does represent an upgrade over Maguire, even despite those 22 turnovers he had. So he would seem to be a good bet to win the starting job this fall if he did transfer to Florida State.

ESPN also reported there is no timetable on Golson to make a decision and he'll visit Georgia on Wednesday.
