EDGY Thoughts: CPL showdown pins Simeon vs. Phillips

So how big will Saturday night's Chicago Public League crossover showdown be between Simeon and Phillips?

Earlier this week, I decided to go out on the ol' Twitter machine and check out some players' accounts. There had to be all kinds of smack talk going on between the Wolverines and the Wildcats, right?

Wrong.

You'd think kids on both sides either deleted their accounts or just stopped tweeting this week.

And knowing high school football players and kids in general, seeing these athletes quiet on Twitter tells me exactly how big this game on at Gately Stadium will be.

In Chicago Public League terms, this game means everything. Simeon is the long established power in CPL football. The Wolverines, under head coach Dante Culbreath (and before him Jesse Chick and Al Scott before him), have made Simeon the steady model of consistency. Many feel that Simeon — hands down — had the best chance of winning the CPL's elusive IHSA football championship title.

Phillips? The Wildcats were basically a CPL afterthought until head coach Tim McAllister came on board in 2011, and transformed the program into a state title contender. Phillips made it to the 4A state title game a season ago, the first CPL football program since the Roy Curry-led Robeson Raiders in 1982 to make it to state.

Both Phillips are Simeon are also loaded again this season and look to have another great chance of making deep runs in the IHSA state playoffs.

Yet, all that matters right now is that Simeon and Phillips will play for everything that matters in the Chicago Public League football world this weekend.

And the Twitterverse is as quiet as it's ever been on both sides.

That alone should tell you everything you need to know.
