Freshman Luwane Pipkins came off the bench to score 12 points and spark Bogan to a 71-41 victory over Taft in the Public League quarterfinal at Chicago State on Sunday.

The Eagles jumped out to a brief 13-10 first quarter lead, but Bogan responded with a 10-0 spurt to close out the quarter leading 20-13.

Pipkins entred the game in the second quarter and drained three consecutive three-pointers. A three-point play by Martell Brewer helped the Bengals pull away to a 32-13 lead with 1:58 remaining in the second quarter.

Bogan (23-2) took a 39-20 lead on a tipped dunk by Devonte Smith with 4:18 remaining in the third quarter. The Bengals then went into their version of the four corner spread as they took turns breaking down the Eagles defense for back door layups and drives to the basket.

Bogan coach Arthur Goodwin said that he felt their quickness was a big advantage.

We knew they couldnt keep up with us in the open court and we wanted to keep forcing the tempo, Goodwin said. The freshman came in and gave up some real good minutes and opened the game up with the long ball.

Pipkins said it felt good to contribute. It is all about team play and my number was called today, said Pipkins. I am glad the coach had that kind of confidence in me in a big game like this. Pipkins shared scoring honors with Kendall Wesley with 12 points each. Brewer had 11 points and nine rebounds.

Joshua Doss scored 18 points and Tim Reamer added 10 for Taft (19-7).

Those three pointers really allowed them to dictate the style of game that was played," Taft coach Bret Nashibayashi said. "They are a very good team and when they can get you to play at their tempo, its trouble.
