Bryan Price rant an example why Robin Ventura doesn't talk much

If he ends up in a media rant-off with Bryan Price, Robin Ventura plans to end up 77 f-bombs shy of the Cincinnati Reds’ manager.

The White Sox manager said Tuesday he understands the point Price wanted to convey about the release of critical information that could hurt a team’s chances being uncovered by the media. Ventura agrees it’s a point of frustration but also understands the media’s role isn’t to protect the White Sox. He said it’s why he often isn’t as loquacious as other managers -- an aspect of his position he enjoys.

“It’s an art,” Ventura said with a smile. “I don’t think I’ve ever been in baseball where the media has kind of protected the organization or a player. I still get what he’s trying to get across. There’s information you don’t want getting out. It’s probably more for me that I don’t talk as much. I think that makes it easier for me not to say anything. Like right now I’m talking too much.”

Price made the wrong kind of headlines on Monday when he erupted on Cincinnati Enquirer beat reporter C. Trent Rosecrans during a pre-game media session. The manager is upset with a report that surfaced after a recent game that identified that All-Star catcher Devin Mesoraco isn’t with the team, information Price thinks hurts the team’s chances because the opposition can plan accordingly.

Ventura understands that aspect of Price’s argument but prefers to handle media in a different fashion.

“I get what he’s saying,” Ventura said. “I don’t think I’m going to articulate the way he did. Everybody has a different way of looking at it. I understand that you guys have a job to do and that’s part of this job. It can get frustrating at times if you want to keep something quiet that you don’t want people to know and somehow it gets out. I get that part. But I also understand you guys have a job to do. I don’t think I’m really as forthcoming as he is.”
