CB Devin Butler will transfer from Notre Dame to Syracuse

Devin Butler will leave Notre Dame and play his final year of collegiate eligibility at Syracuse, as first reported by Irish247 and later tweeted by the senior cornerback on Thursday.

Butler will be immediately eligible to play at Syracuse in 2017.

Butler was arrested early in the morning of Aug. 20 after an incident at the Linebacker Lounge in South Bend in which the Washington, D.C. native was initially charged with battery of a police officer and resisting arrest, both of which were felonies. Butler in October pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of resisting law enforcement and had both of those felony charges dropped.

Butler, a former three-star recruit, was suspended indefinitely after the incident and did not play in 2016. He was already slated to miss at least half of the season after re-fracturing his foot -- which he initially fractured before the Fiesta Bowl last December -- in the summer before his suspension.

Over 37 games (including two starts) from 2013-2015 at Notre Dame, Butler logged 39 tackles, forced a fumble and picked off a pass. Had he returned to notre Dame in 2017, he likely would've been used primarily as a depth guy behind rising sophomore cornerbacks Julian Love, Donte Vaughn and Troy Pride Jr.
