D-Rose finishes 9th in MVP vote with one 1st-place vote

Joel Embiid, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Derrick Rose received the same amount of first-place votes for the NBA's most valuable player award in 2021.

You read that correctly.

In a vote Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokić deservedly won in a landslide — seizing 91 first-place votes — Rose finished ninth behind Embiid, Steph Curry, Antetokounmpo, Chris Paul, Luka Doncic, Damian Lillard and Julius Randle.

Rose's vote came by way of the fan vote, which is conducted online and through Twitter and has represented a 101st ballot for the award for the last 12 years.

Rose certainly had an outsized impact on the New York Knicks' resurgent season. The Tom Thibodeau-coached squad finished the regular season 41-31 overall and 24-11 with the former MVP in the lineup after trading for him in early February.

En route to finishing a finalist in Sixth Man of the Year voting, Rose averaged 14.9 points, 4.2 assists and shot 41.1 percent from 3-point range across 35 regular-season appearances with the Knicks. In their five-game loss to the Atlanta Hawks in the first round of the playoffs, he led the team in scoring (19.4 points per game), assists (5 per game) and 3-point percentage (47.1).

While not quite the MVP heights he reached with the Bulls 10 years ago, not bad at all for the 32-year-old guard, who has completely reinvented his game in the latter part of his career.
