Garza at top of Yankees' list?

The buzz over the past day or so has been the rumors that the Cubs are open for business on everybody, including even Starlin Castro (though they'd have to be completely blown away).

The Cubs have already made it clear they would like to lock up starter Matt Garza long-term, but if that doesn't work out, the Yankees may be the team pushing the hardest for the services of the 28-year-old righty.

CBSSports' Jon Heyman is hearing that the Yankees rank Garza at the top of their list of starting pitchers that may be available before the trading deadline.

The Yankees are 11th in the AL with a 4.82 rotation ERA and Garza has already proven he can pitch in the AL East.

Heyman also says that the Yankees worry that Ryan Dempster, another Cubs starter who very well may be dealt this summer, may not have as much success in the American League.

Obviously if the Cubs are able to lock up Garza to an extension, this would all become a moot point. But if the Yankees are interested, they may be able to put together a package that could sway Theo Epstein and Co.

Left-hander Manny Banuelos and righty Dellin Betances are two of the top pitching prospects in the game today and catcher Gary Sanchez is one of the most promising young backstops. I doubt New York would give up all three guys in a deal, but there is a degree of wealth in the Yankees' system.
