Nike announces investments in local Chicago organizations

NIKE, Inc. announced its FY20 Impact Report, 2025 Targets and its new Black Community Commitment partner, National Urban League, on Wednesday.

The National Urban League partnership announcement coincides with the rollout of $2.75 million in Black Community Commitment investments to local organizations that aim toward economic empowerment, education and social justice on behalf of Black communities in seven U.S. cities. The following organizations are Chicago-based:

  • Urban Juncture: Funding will support Urban Juncture with the development and access to economic growth & entrepreneurial opportunities for Black people on the cities Southside. They also leverage the historic landmark “The Forum” which serves as community center, retail spaces for black business owners, and weekly programming including boxville. Boxville is a container community that houses over 20 black entrepreneurs & creatives, increasing commerce & revenue for black neighborhoods. ($75.000)
  • Hugs No Slugs: Funding will support the continuation of the Safehouses, Hugs No Slugs's resource centers for the community that provide food, shelter, and safety for the Chicago community. ($75,000)
  • Chicago Votes: Funding will support assisting youth with legal services who are serving life sentences and/or wrongly convicted as well as support recently released individuals who need both housing & employment initiatives.  ($50,000)

Nike believes that National Urban League and their mission – to help African Americans and others in underserved communities achieve their highest true social parity, economic self-reliance, power and civil rights – align with Nike's goals.

Additionally, the FY20 NIKE, Inc. Impact Report showed the company has increased representation of women globally across the enterprise to 49.5 percent and representation of racial and ethnic minorities to 29 percent of the VP leadership team in the United States.

Over the next five years, Nike aims to achieve 29 goals focused on people, planet and play. The following are some of the goals Nike hopes to accomplish:

  • 35% Representation of racial and ethnic communities in U.S. corporate workforce.
  • $10 Million Investment in Historically Black Colleges & Universities and Hispanic-Serving Institutions to increase intern and direct hires.  
  • 50% Representation of women in global corporate workforce.  
  • 100% Women in supply chain have increased access to career opportunities.

Nike says they are committed to clear action plans with clear goals and want to help shape a better future across the company and around the world.
