The Class of 2017 "boat" continues to fill up at Western Michigan for head coach P.J. Fleck this spring, as the Broncos added a verbal commitment over the weekend from Homewood-Flossmoor junior guard John Michael Schmitz. Schmitz is now the ninth known verbal commitment for Western Michigan's 2017 recruiting class from Illinois.

Schmitz joins Rockford Boylan defensive end Noah Hickcox, Rockford Lutheran defensive back Marcus Haynes, Bishop McNamara offensive lineman Dylan Deatherage, Bishop McNamara wide receiver Chris Bell, Phillips defensive tackle Chris Elmore, Naperville Central offensive lineman Trevor Campbell, Montini Catholic running back Prince Walker and East St. Louis quarterback Rey Estes as verbally committed names from the Land of Lincoln.

Schmitz is the Broncos' 17th known verbal commitment in the Class of 2017 overall.

"As soon as I went there (for a visit), I knew that Western Michigan was one of my top schools," Schmitz said. "But I just wanted to talk it over with my family. On my second visit on Saturday, I knew Western Michigan was right for me, so I committed. Just the overall culture at Western Michigan is outstanding, and it's just the right fit for me."
