While two rookies -- Avisail Garcia and Leury Garcia -- helped the White Sox to a 6-1 win over the Astros on Tuesday night, a third rookie became the butt of some classing hazing in the dugout.
Starting pitcher Andre Rienzo, who last pitched Monday and was enjoying a night off, had a cup lined with gum placed on top of his cap by shortstop Alexei Ramirez, who was apparently bored after not being in the starting lineup for the first time in the White Sox 132 games this season.
As Frank Thomas noted during White Sox Postgame Live, it's a tradition that has gone on "forever," and for more than two innings the 25-year-old pitcher didn't notice the cup on his head until someone informed him of the prank. As seen in the video, he seemed to take the joke the right way, understanding that kind of lighthearted hazing comes with the territory.
Thomas pointed out that perhaps Rienzo not noticing the prank was a good thing, that he was focused on the game.
"He's a rookie, he's focused on the ballgame," Thomas said. "You want to see that from rookies, not walking in and out of the clubhouse. He's on the bench watching the ballgame."
In six starts Rienzo is 1-0 with a 4.21 ERA.
