It was simple, really.

It wasn't thought out ahead of time. It wasn't something Hawk Harrelson imagined would go down forever in MLB history.

The facts were plain and simple: When Frank Thomas was up to bat, he'd hurt that ball time after time.

And just like that, a nickname was born; a nickname that just about perfectly fit the career of a Hall of Famer.

"It just blurt out one day. I kept saying 'he'd hurt it, he'd hurt it, he'd hurt it' — he'd kill one into left center, he'd hurt it," Harrelson said.

"He hits a home run and I want him go to first base and I said 'The Big Hurt' and just blurted it out. And that's how it came about. It turned out to be a pretty good nickname for him."
