The role is vastly different but the motivation for Paul Konerko to return is clear.

Konerko, who signed a one-year, $2.5-million deal on Wednesday to return in a limited role, said he was severely disappointed by a poor all-around season for him and the White Sox.

Konerko had a .244/.313/.355 line and produced career lows with 12 homers and 54 RBIs in 126 games and the team’s 99 losses marked the fourth-most in franchise history. Though he won’t have as much of an opportunity to impact the club on the field, Konerko hopes to make his presence felt in the clubhouse.

He wants to help get the franchise back on the right path.

“I'm a White Sox for life and it killed me to see what went on last year and helping along with that it killed me,” Konerko said. “So it's tough when I have an opportunity to come back to turn my back on that and help make it better. That's a big portion of that. That will make me feel good when I'm gone.”
